Sleep, the most important part of your routine...

I have been wondering why my training has been inconsistent this season. Last season was pretty much shot due to my lacerated shin but this season has been ... Well, lacerated.

I have been plagued by illness, injury and more and after listening to a sleep specialist on the radio the other day I realized it was from lack of sleep.

Most people think 8 hours of sleep a night is the ideal when in actual fact some can function efficiently from as little as 4, while others need up to 12 hours of sleep a night.

If you don't get enough sleep you can be more of a threat on the road than a drunk driver!

It also plays havoc with your health in terms of how often you get sick and how long your illness lasts...

In fact the specialist stated if you aren't getting enough sleep, proper diet and exercise are wasted (his words not mine).

The more I thought of it the more I realized this was me. Sleeping 4 hours some nights then trying to make up for it with 2 hour naps and occasionally getting my 6.5 to 7 hours a night(rarely is more like it).

So getting 6.5 to 7 hours of sleep a night has become a priority. Also, I am back on my training routine of two years ago with more core work outs and weights on top of the cycling and running and (ahem swimming). I am a big boy. I can handle it.

Last night did my 20 min core work out, 45 mins spinning and 20 minutes stretching. Today is my birthday. Gonna celebrate with a core work out, a run and some stretching...

Now I gotta go, I feel like a nap coming on ;)
